Rhythm and flow

This workshop uses cumbia as a way to connect young people with their bodies and each other. Cumbia is rhythmic music that was born in the Colombian Caribbean region from the cultural mixture of the native people, European colonisers, and slaves. The workshop begins with each participant feeling and hearing their own heartbeat, finding their body’s rhythm and moving with it. Then the group comes together and plays cumbia rhythms with percussion or improvised “drums”. Camilo shows us that our bodies are membranes (like drums) and that the rhythms flow through us all.
